Analysing coming of age trailers Moonlight

The fourth trailer I’m going to be analysing in my genre is Moonlight.

Setting

The film is set in Miami, a city with a strong cultural identity that contrasts the personal struggles of the protagonist.

Character Types

The main character, Chiron, is portrayed at three different stages of his life, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, which immediately hints the coming-of-age genre. The trailer also introduces characters such as his mother, who represents both love and conflict.

Themes

The trailer hints at Chiron’s struggle with his sexual identity, his relationship with his mother, and his attempts to understand himself.

Visuals

The trailer features moments of isolation and vulnerability. For instance, scenes of Chiron gazing into the water or walking alone emphasise the internal battles he faces.
