Analysing coming of age trailers The Edge of Seventeen

The final movie I’m going to analyse in my genre is The Edge of Seventeen.

Setting
The film takes place in a high school setting, which is a typical environment for a coming-of-age story. The school, home, and social spaces are all familiar locations where teenagers navigate the complications of friendship, love, and self-discovery.

Character Types
The protagonist, Nadine, is a typical coming-of-age character; a teenager who feels out of place, awkward, and misunderstood.

Dialogue
The dialogue in the trailer is full of witty, and often self-criticising humour, which reflects Nadine’s inner struggle.

Themes
The trailer suggests that her journey will involve confronting her insecurities, dealing with changes in friendships, and finding a way to accept herself. These are all key themes in coming-of-age stories.

Visuals
The trailer uses visuals that highlight Nadine’s emotional journey, such as shots of her walking alone, sitting in a car, or staring off into the distance, all that prove her isolation. Additionally, scenes that show Nadine’s interactions with her friends and family suggest the complexities of relationships, a common aspect of coming-of-age films.
